Breaking News!!!
University of Kansas Study
Jazzercise was at the forefront of a groundbreaking study conducted by the Breast Cancer Survivorship Center (BCSC) at the University of Kansas Cancer Center in conjunction with Back in the Swing that indicated the importance of fitness and exercise in reducing the chance of breast cancer recurrence.
From 2008-2010, half of the study’s participants had access to Jazzercise classes during a six month intervention. In a preliminary review of the data, participants with access to Jazzercise:
* Lost more than 10% of their body weight - it is widely known that a decrease of as little as 5% of body weight has significant positive health implications, such as lowering blood pressure, lowering LDL ("bad cholesterol"), improves glucose tolerance (decreasing risk for diabetes) and lowers risk for heart disease.
* Lost a median of 3.7% of their overall body fat measured by DEXA.
* Spent four times more minutes per week exercising at the end of the study, than before it started.
* Improved their fitness levels - including flexibility, grip strength, endurance and resting and active heart rate.
* Significantly improved on measures of quality of life - including mood and menopausal symptoms.
* Reduced their chances for recurrence of breast cancer.
Technique Tip of the Month
Lateral Deltoid Raise
1. Start in a standing position with your feet shoulder width apart, weights in your hands, and your arms extended down by your sides.
2. Face your palms toward your legs and point your thumbs forward in the starting position.
3. Contract your deltoids (shoulder muscles) to lift your arms out to shoulder level. Your knuckles, wrists, and elbows should be at the same level as your shoulders.
4. Slowly lower your arms down to your sides using your deltoids to control the speed in which you lower your arms.
5. Keep your elbows soft throughout the movement.
