Do you know how often you should work out to stay healthy? According to the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, adults need to do two types of physical activity to sustain extensive health benefits: aerobic and muscle strengthening - for a total of 60 minutes, five days a week. Each time you come to a regular 60-minute Jazzercise class, you can check it off your list for the day!
Now Playing at Jazzercise
Now is “The Time (Dirty Bit)” (Black Eyed Peas) to come “Shake That Thing” (Gwyneth Paltrow) at Jazzercise, because baby you’re a “Firework” (Katy Perry). Your “Heartbeat” (Enrique Iglesias feat. See you in class!
Technique Tip of the Month
Abduct/Adduct in Supine Position
1. Start in the supine position (lying on your back) with your knees and feet together.
2. Tightly contract your gluteal muscles (located in your buttocks) to lift your pelvis off of the floor.
3. Contract your right abductors (muscles located near the hip bone) to pull your right knee out to the side. Allow your right foot to roll to the side as your knee moves to the right.
4. Stabilize your left leg by contracting your core muscles. Avoid letting your left leg drop out to the opposite side when the right leg moves.
5. Contract your right adductors (muscles located in your inner thighs) to pull your right knee up to the starting position.
6. Reverse for the left side.
Performing this exercise on a regular basis will help tighten and tone your gluteals, abductors, and adductors. Hip adductor exercises strengthen thigh muscles, contribute to proper posture and slim the inner thighs. Strong hip adductor muscles reinforce knee alignment, protecting them during physical activity.
You will use this exercise in class during the routine “Who I Am” by I Kandi.

Breaking News!!!
University of Kansas Study
Jazzercise was at the forefront of a groundbreaking study conducted by the Breast Cancer Survivorship Center (BCSC) at the University of Kansas Cancer Center in conjunction with Back in the Swing that indicated the importance of fitness and exercise in reducing the chance of breast cancer recurrence.
From 2008-2010, half of the study’s participants had access to Jazzercise classes during a six month intervention. In a preliminary review of the data, participants with access to Jazzercise:
* Lost more than 10% of their body weight - it is widely known that a decrease of as little as 5% of body weight has significant positive health implications, such as lowering blood pressure, lowering LDL ("bad cholesterol"), improves glucose tolerance (decreasing risk for diabetes) and lowers risk for heart disease.
* Lost a median of 3.7% of their overall body fat measured by DEXA.
* Spent four times more minutes per week exercising at the end of the study, than before it started.
* Improved their fitness levels - including flexibility, grip strength, endurance and resting and active heart rate.
* Significantly improved on measures of quality of life - including mood and menopausal symptoms.
* Reduced their chances for recurrence of breast cancer.
